Summary:The formation and properties of a class of Al-rich bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are reported. The Al contents for these alloys can reach up to 40 at.%, which is the highest in known BMGs. The Al-rich BMGs deviate greatly from eutectic composition and show high thermal stability and fragility, and very high mechanical strength. These Al-rich BMGs might have implications for Al-based BMGs in general and for understanding the role of Al in glass formation.
