He’s variational method for the Benjamin–Bona–Mahony equation and the Kawahara equation
Variational principles for the generalized Benjamin–Bona–Mahony equation and the Kawahara equation are established using He’s semi-inverse method. The solitary solutions are obtained using the Ritz method.
