Summary: | Research in atmospheric flight mechanics continued to bring advances in UAVs and micro air vehicles (MAVs) this year. Here, Klyde et al present a sampling of these research and application developments. Boeing Phantom Works team at NASA Dryden continues the flight envelope expansion of the X-48B Blended Wing Body (BWB) prototype. With a 21-ft wingspan, this 500-lb remotely piloted aircraft is designed to demonstrate the viability of the BWB concept. In commercial aviation, the first flight of the Boeing 777 freighter took place on July 14 and Boeing will participate in the 270 hr of planned flight test activities. The world's largest commercial aircraft, the Airbus A380, completed its 1,000th commercial flight for Singapore Airlines in August. |
