Description
Summary:Examines voluntary HIV counseling & testing (VCT), sexually transmitted infection (STI) management, & safer sex promotion activities conducted within the male circumcision trial in a rural district of Uganda. The trial is described, & findings revealed a 51%-60% efficacy for prevention of incident HIV in circumcised men vs uncircumcised men. Further, results suggest high & similar uptake of VCT, STI management, & safe sex behavior. Given male circumcision's only partial protection against HIV acquisition or transmission, such programs are seen as most effective when implemented alongside intensive risk reduction promotion & messages regarding risk linked to early resumption of sexual activity before complete healing has occurred in newly circumcised men.
