Summary: | A native of Bacolor, Pampanga, Doña Luisa Gonzaga de León was the first Filipino woman to publish a book—the Ejercicio Cotidiano (Daily Devotion)—in about 1844. This article introduces the writer, with a brief sketch of her life and family background, and her book whose significance in Philippine literature has been overlooked. The book is a compilation and translation, from Spanish to Kapampangan, of daily prayers and the liturgy of the Catholic mass. As the first missal in the vernacular, the book is seen as ahead of its time. Its most original part is the preface, which in this article is translated to English. |
