Summary: | There are several myths surrounding the discussion on child labor. Child labor is rampant around the world and is likely to affect the current and future welfare of many generations. Understanding the real causes of the phenomenon is thus a fundamental academic task in order to contribute to effective policy making. Banning child labor may have a positive effect if it is accompanied by compulsory schooling, a better supply of public education, and targeted subsidies aimed at compensating the families' economic cost of education. The measured effect of programs like the PROGRESA program in Mexico, which involves precisely that set of measures, is a sign of hope for effective public intervention. |
