Description
Summary:This paper describes some aspects of fieldwork undertaken from December 1990 until April 1991 on the wreck of the Dutch East India Company ship the "Oosterland" (1697). Because of the uniqueness of this project within a southern African context, the emphasis of this report lies with technical aspects of fieldwork applicable to maritime archaeological research. It is envisaged that underwater excavations will continue in future. Detailed analyses of recovered materials and archival research are ongoing and preliminary results will be published shortly. Parallel to this, some inter-disciplinary projects are currently being undertaken. One project focuses on the use of a Geographical Information System (GIS) to develop a framework for the reconstruction of spatial relationships of artefacts and features. Other joint research projects concentrate on aspects of oceanography and beach morphology related to the wreck site and the chemical analyses of recovered artefacts.
