Summary:The concept of workplace incivility is introduced and how this can potentially spiral into increasingly intense aggressive behaviors is explained. To gain an understanding of the mechanisms that underlie an incivility spiral, what happens at key points (the starting and tipping points) are examined. Furthermore, several factors that can facilitate the occurrence and escalation of an incivility spiral and the secondary spirals that can result is described. Research propositions are offered and implications of workplace incivility for researchers and practitioners are discussed.
