Summary: | The significance for environmental management of some traditional approaches to coastal resource use in the Western Mediterranean is considered. A case study of the Emporda Wetlands in Spain illustrates conservation policies based on the maintenance and enhancement of humid pastures as a strategy to increase biodiversity within a wetland environment. Traditional forms of adaptation to flood prone land in such low-lying coastal areas may prove useful for modern conservation strategies. These adaptations encompass agricultural and resource management practices that have enhanced biodiversity and environmental quality. |
