Summary: | The comunidades eclesiais/eclesiales de base, or base Christian communities (CEBs) have maintained their role as important grass-roots communitarian groups in Latin America. A study of CEBs in Sao Paulo, Brazil, for the period 1984-1993 indicates that, while the overall CEB membership has become more conservative, an activist membership remains within the movement. The new guard of conservatives generally has opted more for expressions of Catholic religious devotion than for political action. Despite the departure of many of the original activists, the CEBs' have retained their appeal and influence. |
