Summary: | Public transportation systems in Tokyo and Osaka, including railway, subway, bus, and tram, are described. Route length, number of vehicles, number of passengers, and other characteristics of each mode are given. The various roles of both governmental and private organizations in transportation planning and management in Japan are identified. Attention is given to the development in Osaka of a transportation system that integrates existing bus, rail, and other transit systems. Urban public transportation systems in Japan and the U.K. are compared. |
