Summary: | Efforts to preserve and interpret Lowell's past through parks and exhibits have, to date, focused largely on textile mills and waterpower systems. Recently, however, emphasis has begun to shift toward research into the everyday lives of Lowell's workers. The Lowell Boott Mills study is only one of many projects contributing to this endeavor. It is unique among the present projects in that it employs an archeological approach in an interdisciplinary framework¹ in order to provide a comprehensive view of the material conditions of life for Boott operatives at work and at home. This broad overview of all aspects of the research indicates how results of the project are contributing to a deeper understanding of the changing nature of the policy of corporate paternalism and its effects on workers' lives. |
