Description
Summary:Increasing complexities of modern environments and socioeconomic pressures to maintain efficient design/build cycles have forced architects to seek new tools and methods created by advances in technology in architectural design. This trend has recently accelerated and in allied disciplines the introduction of computers has significantly improved design practices. Yet, in architecture computational aids have resulted in marginal improvements. In order to provide insights needed for well-directed change to occur this study explored the integration of CADD applications into the architectural design process through a survey of AIA member firms. CADD and DBMS utilization was examined with respect to both firm size and design philosophy. Architecture firms noted for their design excellence were also surveyed. Differences existed among various characteristics, applications, and satisfaction levels. The use of satisfaction as an indicator (unique to this study) provided information not revealed in analysis of CADD use solely in quantitative terms. Each of these areas provided information not previously reported. Also the results indicated that: the benefits of using CADD in the design process is recognized by architecture firms; some CADD packages better supported design Junctions, others supported documentation Junctions; refinements by CADD manufacturers are required to make CADD a viable design tool that will meet the needs of the profession.
