Description
Summary:The Alvey Report (1982), which describes a research program for information technology in the UK, places special emphasis on the development of intelligent knowledge-based information systems. Successful development and implementation of intelligent knowledge-based systems will not be accomplished unless some problems beyond the scope of pure technology are addressed, including problems of natural language representation of knowledge, and problems involved in the human/computer interface. In addition, research is needed to develop quantification techniques for information processes. Both information and knowledge must be measurable in the same terms. Developments in information technology must not progress in the absence of developments in the field of information science. Specialists in the fields of technology, mathematics, and the social sciences must join together to study information processes, and the individual and social impacts of information technology.
