Summary: | Investigated the experience of patient suicide among psychiatric trainees in South Thames, and looked at the effects it has. An anonymous postal questionnaire was circulated to 400 trainees, of whom 203 responded, and 109 had had one or more patient suicides. The effect of the suicide on the doctor was judged to be moderate or severe in 126 of the total 168 suicide events reported. Concludes that patient suicide must have a higher profile in training, and formal systems need to be created to provide support and education in this area. (Original abstract - amended) |
