Summary: | Views strategies of homonymy and reduplication as phenomena appearing at a very early age, resulting from a deficient sound-inventory and sound-distribution. Data from a longitudingal study shows that: (a) such strategies can appear later in the child's linguistic development than it has been proposed; and (b) the lexical item has to be considered a central unity, beyond the earliest stages, in the acquisition of phonology.
