Summary: | During the summer of 1970, the Reading Foundation of Chicago contracted with the Compton Unified School District to operate a speed reading program in the district for the following school year. All regular seventh grade students enrolled in English classes were scheduled into the program for nine weeks. The major performance objective was stated as follows: 75% of the students in the program will increase their reading speed five times over their beginning level with 10% more comprehension after 24 hours of instruction and 22 hours of outside reading. After completion of the course, diagnostic reading tests were evaluated, and the following were demonstrated: (1) Vocabulary and reading rate test scores increased; and (2) Comprehension scores decreased during the program. Only 13% of the students increased their compre 10% and reading speed five times over their beginning levels, falling far from the 75% level projected by the Reading Foundation. |
