Summary: | Mary Wootan Masland is the recepient of the 1976 Award of the New York State Branch of the Orton Society. Masland's career is traced, from her founding of a speech clinic at Montreal's children's Memorial Hospital almost 40 years ago to her recent implementation of a School Volunteer Program to identify & help academically 'at risk' kindergartners. This last accomplishment was a 'pilot feasibility project' which has been so successful that it is now ready for expansion. Throughout her career, Masland has pursued her conviction that every child's language development is a continuum, with each stage integrally related with the child's past development & future. She has been a strong force in bringing together many people in the speech & hearing fields with those interested in school age & later academic problems. J. Schwarz |
