Summary: | S. Issman's work is characterized by a tension between logical empiricism & the Polish semantic school on the one hand & pragmatism on the other. The first part of his work is devoted to meaning, definitions, & analyticity. He denied the possibility of applying the logical theory of definitions to natural langs. For Issman, definitions are actions, nonarbitrary interventions in language to be justified pragmatically, not by their 'truth'. Issman developed a pragmatic theory of analyticity. In the philosophy of mathematics he rejected platonism & formalism & attempted a pragmatic synthesis of intuitionism & nominalism. Although he rejected classical solutions to the induction problem he failed to apply his pragmatic principles to it consistently. His contributions to propositional calculus & inductive logic are described. A. Orianne |
