Summary: | Information transmission in spoken & written language is discussed. Differences between these communication media are examined in terms of the transmission channel (acoustic & optical) & surface structure. Notions of noise & redundancy are discussed, & basic text types of spoken & written lang are presented & illustrated with examples from Finnish. Analysis of surface structure reveals that it is horizontally & vertically more expanded in spoken than written lang. The surface structure of spoken lang is more divided & contains more items per the same information content of deep structure. Spoken & written language models are presented & supported with Finnish examples. Z. Dubiel |
