Description
Summary:The opposition between syntax, semantics, & pragmatics is considered from the viewpoint of the constitution of the object of linguistics. A radical separation between syntax & semantics is associated with the beginnings of the mathematization of natural langs. Examined is the current evolution of this viewpoint vis-a-vis various forms of syntactico-semantic complexity. Pragmatic aspects of natural languages are presented as quasi-transcendental & not merely empirical communication conditions. Aim conditions & foundational conditions of discourse are distinguished. The first - the illocutionary element of lang - corresponds to thetic, presuppositional, & performative phenomena. It is emphasized that the syntactic/semantic distinction is an epistemological fiction, contrary to the fundamental opposition between syntax-semantics & pragmatics in natural langs. AA Tr by A.
