Description
Summary:Summarized is research concerning evaluative reactions toward speech varieties associated with Chicanos, ie, contrasting evaluative reactions to Standard English vs Standard Spanish (Sp), Standard English vs Chicano accented Eng, & to varying degrees of accented Eng. Chicano & Anglo adolescents rated the personalities of 16 M speakers representing 4 lang categories: Eng-home, Sp-home, Eng-school, & Sp-school. Both groups showed preference for Eng-school & a slight preference for Sp-home. English rated higher on both status & solidarity scales. Reactions to accented English showed that while accentedness often elicits a prejudicial reaction, accentedness may also be a way of maintaining group identity. Although English speakers received more favorable ratings, Chicanos did not prefer accented English in the home context. I. Mielonen
