Summary: | The relationship between South Picean & other Sabellan languages & its position within the Umbrian-Sabinian group are investigated in an analysis of the ending -h attested in South Picean in the third person plural forms of the perfect tense. G. Meiser's explanation (Lautgeschichte der umbrischen Sprache [The Phonetic History of the Umbrian Language], Innsbruck, 1986) is examined in detail & flaws in this account are identified. It is proposed that the ending be explained as a result of the process *-nt > *-nd > -h rather than in terms of analogical innovation. A modified schema of the relationship between Indo-European, Oscan-Umbrian, Sabellian dialects, & South Picean is outlined. 14 References. Z. Dubiel |
