Description
Summary:An examination of wh-in-situ phenomena of three Quechua languages with reference to existing analyses of Chinese argues against the widely accepted hypothesis of wh-movement at logical form (LF). It is claimed that the facts of Ancash Quechua (AQ), where wh-in-situ does not display empty category principle effects, strongly support an account using coindexation with an entity in the CP projection that behaves like a quantifier. Although the wh-word in situ has variable-like properties, they are not identical to those of wh-traces, contrary to universal grammar hypotheses based on Chinese. Possible approaches to an explanation of the sharp difference between Chinese & AQ are explored; complete elimination of movement rules from LF is rejected in the present analysis. 26 References. J.
