Summary: | A review of History of Englishes. New Methods and Interpretations in Historical Linguistics (Rissanen, Matti, Ihalainen, Ossi, Nevalainen, Terttu, & Taavitsainen, Irma [Eds], Berlin: Mouton de Gruyter, 1992 [see listing in IRPL, this issue]). This 800-page volume contains proceedings of the sixth International Conference on English Historical Linguistics held in 1986 at U Helsinki, Finland. Detailed individual critiques are provided for 20 of the contributions, 5 of which address issues of theory & methodology of language change as applied to English. Data-oriented studies under examination include four essays on word order, three on case, & four on the development of relative clause syntax. Other critiques assess the use of corpus data in analyses of subordinating and, agentive by, Middle Scots verb morphology, & variation involving do in Jane Austen's writings. 31 References. J.
