Summary: | THIS RESEARCH INVESTIGATES THE CRUCIAL PROBLEM OF IDENTIFYING THE KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF DISCRETE GROUPS OF CITIZENS HOLDING DIVERGENT VIEWS ON CENTRAL ISSUES OF CONSUMERISM. MEASURES ARE DRAWN FROM THE WORK OF BEHAVIORAL SCIENTISTS WHO HAVE INVESTIGATED HOW GENERAL ATTITUDES TOWARD ONE'S ENVIRONMENT INFLUENCE SPECIFIC CONCERNS ABOUT NARROWER ASPECTS OF THE MILIEU. AMONG THE CONCLUSIONS REACHED ARE - 1. CONSUMERS EXHIBIT A COMPLEX AND DIVERSE SET OF CONCERNS, SUGGESTING THAT BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT LEADERS CONSIDER A BROAD RANGE OF REMEDIES. 2. THE CONCERNS WHICH CONSTITUTE CONSUMERISM EVIDENTLY HAVE THEIR ROOTS IN BROAD SOCIAL DISCONTENTS. 3. TO THE EXTENT THAT CONSUMERISM REPRESENTS NONMARKET CONCERNS, STRATEGIES FOCUSED PRIMARILY ON CORRECTING INEQUITIES IN THE MARKETING SYSTEM WILL BE INEFFECTIVE. 4. TO REMEDY DISCONTENTS, BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT LEADERS MUST VIEW CONSUMERISM PROBLEMS IN THEIR WIDEST CONTEXT. CHARTS - REFERENCES. |
