Summary:The Anti-Secession Law was adopted on 14 March 2005, the final day of the annual session of the National People's Congress of the PRC. This Taiwan-specific piece of legislation overshadowed Jiang Zemin's final exit from the political scene and can be considered as the most important business transacted at this session. This Chinese move has attracted considerable international attention in the media, amongst China scholars and from foreign governments. However, there is widespread divergence of views regarding the motivations for this action, its timing, its real import and potential consequences.
