Summary: | The election of Michelle Bachelet as president of Chile in December 2005 was concurrent with the election for the Chamber of Deputies & the Senate. This is the first time since the country's 1989 transition to democracy that the Concertacion holds a majority in both houses of Congress. In the presidential campaign, Bachelet's platform was represented as a continuation of President Lagos' policies. Her election means that the Chilean electorate wants to continue the trajectory of Lagos' priorities. Although President Bachelet should have an easy transition, she must take full advantage of the electoral success of the Concertacion to achieve control of both legislative and executive arms of government.
