Summary: | An assessment of the legacies of Nestor Kirchner's period in office noting ruptures and continuities - both rhetorical and substantial - with its predecessors in economic policy, social indicators and modes of rule, as a basis from which to gauge the country's longer-term prospects. His successor - his wife, Cristina Fernandez - will need to quickly re-establish presidential authority; forge a distinctive political identity of her own; and develop an effective price-control policy to counter rising inflation. In the longer run, she will need a more effective political base than the Frente para la Victoria: the situation as it stands marks the end of timid experiments with building a centre left coalition; the way seems clear for the traditional system of Peronist domination to return with a vengeance.
