Summary: | Despite three decades of warnings on greenhouse gas buildup and the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol on environmental protection, scientists have been ineffective in influencing public opinion and policy on climate change. The US shows little commitment to climate protection and polls shows that Americans are not very worried about it. The media and non-governmental organizations have not given it the urgent attention it deserves and energy and business groups resist policy changes. US state and private sector initiatives to reduce greenhouse gases are reviewed, eg, the McCain-Lieberman bill. Much remains to be done on the international, national, and consumer levels. Climate protection in the US requires a new movement engaging consumers, the media, scientists, and enlightened businesses to demand action from government and corporations. |
