Summary: | This paper presents a socio-historical and comparative critique of two early modern art movements in Canada and Mexico. The paper examines Diego Rivera and the 'Tres Grandes' and Lawren Harris and the 'Group of Seven' with reference to Pierre Bourdieu's analytic framework. I argue that both artistic movements originate in the nationalist agendas of political and economic elites despite the artistic ideologies to the contrary. A comparison of these two cases illuminates not only an interesting cross-national coincidence but also an unusual source and use of nationalism. |
