Cahalan began his public opinion research career as an assistant to George Gallup at the American Institute of Public Opinion. After serving as a naval officer during World War II, Cahalan joined the staff of the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Denver where he started a graduate program in opinion research training. In the mid-1960s, Cahalan joined Ira Cisin at the Social Research Group at George Washington University in the conduct of landmark national studies on US drinking practices. After retirement in 1979, Cahalan turned his attentions from social epidemiology to public policy.
