Summary: | A study was conducted to analyze the F sex role in terms of: (1) stimuli, (2) intervening variables, eg, achievement, affiliation, & power, & (3) responses (S-I-R Model). Data were gathered from 84 freshman women in Auburn U's School of Home Economics. Ss were administered: (A) the Parent-Child Relations Questionnaire (Roe, A. & Siegelman, M., Child Development, 1963, 34, 355-369), (B) the Feminine Role Inventory (Fand, A., "Sex Role and Self Concept; A Study of the Feminine Sex Role as Perceived by Eight-Five College Women for Themselves, Their Ideal Woman, the Average Woman and Men's Ideal Woman," PhD Dissertation, Cornell U), & (C) a six-card thematic apperception series. Additional information regarding grade point average (GPA) & choice of field of study was obtained from U records. The two expectations based on behavior theory & the S-I-R Model were only partially confirmed: (a) although demanding parents had a different effect on their children than unconcerned parents, as predicted, the love-rejection dimension had no influence, & (b) no support was found for the hypothesized relationship between sex role/achievement & power or sex role/achievement & GPA. 3 Tables.
