Summary:A review of literature concerning marriage & the family, particularly concerning sex roles. Diverse areas covered include: (1) traditional roles & relations, & the alternatives thereof, including a discussion of exclusive, alternative, & sex-neutral roles & the socialization processes which generate these types, (2) sociology of work & occupations, (3) social stratification & status studies, (4) historical reconstruction of family structures & changes in these structures, (5) historical examination of role clusters both within our society & in other societies, (6) studies of the life course, such as gerontology & work dealing with transitional events or life crises, (7) social stratification & status studies, (8) examination of nonfamilial roles, & (9) interdisciplinary & comparative research. Such literature has granted new perspectives & generated novel questions concerning the family, work, socialization & identity, & social structure. C. Grindle.
