Description
Summary:Differences in earnings & the impact of education on earnings between anglophone & francophone Canadians are assessed through data on 15,887 male anglophones & 7,709 male francophones included in the 1971 Canadian Census Public Use Sample. Not only do francophones earn less, but they receive less return per year of schooling; these differences are greater for older persons, suggesting that earnings inequality has been declining. While returns to schooling are larger in Quebec, differences between anglophones & francophones are also larger. This may be due to more severe market discrimination, to lack of exposure of francophones to a non-French environment, & to outmigration of skilled francophones from Quebec & immigration of skilled anglophones to Quebec. These are cross-sectional results; time-series data would provide a basis for firmer conclusions. 4 Tables. Modified Author Conclusion.
