Summary: | Muller attempts to unify two approaches for explaining income mobility: A structural perspective which stresses the determination of mobility behavior by exogenous structural factors and an individualistic perspective which considers mobility as a deliberate decision of an individual, often guided by motivational factors. Consequently, he distinguishes between two kinds of poverty: Poverty caused by structural constraints below the poverty line and poverty as a result of the underutilization of structural chances. |
