Summary: | This article presents the main lines of a research project on the contents of American sociology regarding Latin America in the 1960s. Our study is supported by numerous first and second hand sources. This period is particularly interesting because it coincides with the transition towards a new theoretical current: development theory and new ways to study foreign countries through area studies. This article shows how sociology integrated area studies cultural and development theory that emerged from interaction between economic, political, military, and scientific fields. A variety of funding resources and scarce interaction among researchers suggests a heavily fragmented sociology. This sociology perceives the region in terms of crisis, which does not corresponds to the political interests of the United States, but rather is the consequence of a high degree of disorganization, fragmentation, and polarization of research in this area.
