Description
Summary:This article presents some findings from a review of social experiments and multimedia trials in the adoption of multimedia-based technologies in Europe. After briefly examining what is meant by the term social experiment and multimedia trials, the article first explores the origins and motives of such experiments. The main part of the article then summarizes a set for reviews of social experiments in multimedia and related technologies undertaken in a range of European countries. The article emphasizes the diversity in multimedia experiments and trials. It examines their national and sectorial distribution and considers some possible approaches toward a taxonomy of experiment along a number of dimensions, and in particular in terms of their orientation toward addressing technical matters or understanding the social purposes and contexts of future users.
