Description
Summary:How have the nations that slave-traders assigned to African slaves been reinterpreted by the latter & their descendants within Catholic organizations & then Candomble communities in the quest for ethnic & religious identities? The history of the concept of a nation (with its many meanings referring to ethnicity, politics, & religion) is recounted to shed light on the various phases leading up to the current situation. The construction of the Candomble tradition in Bahia (Brazil) is partly based on the inventions of a priestly elite & partly legitimated via the writings of intellectuals. 43 References.
