Description
Summary:Married and not-married Hmong female high school students were compared on attitudinal, achievement, and background variables to explore factors associated with early marriage and to determine consequences of early marriage for mental health and educational expectations. Although more than half of the female students were married by their senior year of high school, the majority remained in school, had educational expectations similar to their not-married peers, and were not differentiated on indices of depression, psychological well-being, self-esteem, self-derogation, or mastery. The more usual individualistic models of marriage choice, which would consider this pattern "nonnormative" or "disorderly," may not be appropriate for ethnic subgroups such as the Hmong, where high educational expectations coexist with high rates of early marriage and early childbearing.
