Summary:How are we to understand the simultaneous emergence of two political practice -- caudillisme & pronunciamientos -- & their widespread introduction throughout the Hispanic-American area following the Independence revolutions? This article, focusing on the Greater Colombian area between 1810 & 1840, offers an explanation of the genesis of these forms & their function.
