Summary: | This article is a report of a survey conducted in Grenada in 1984 during the campaign period of the general election which provided a suitable climate for soliciting public opinion on major questions concerning the performance of the PRG. The survey team found that Grenadians were willing and eager to discuss and confront the question of assessing the Government of Grenada led by the late Maurice Bishop and Bernard Coard of the New Jewel Movement from 1979 to 1983. The survey sought to discover the amount of popular support enjoyed by the PRG. Levels of support seem to be related to educational attainment, age and gender, whether the persons were employed or not after the 1983 invasion; conditions of living under the PRG. Specific programmes were singled out from the over-all plan for approval, such as popular involvemnt and participation of the people. The people's perceptions of the PRG's election strategy and not holding of elections, changing freedom of speech, the Cuban presence and the communist threat were also polled. |
