Description
Summary:This article is drawn from the results of a research project conducted by Soviet sociologists who, using various methods over a 35-year period (1963-1998), established a major database of information about what has happened to young people in the USSR upon finishing secondary school. On the basis of material from research mainly in the Novosibirsk area, trends in the evolution of the Soviet educational system from the 1960s to the present are described, showing how this system has been incapable of ensuring equal opportunity for all students to undertake long courses of study in secondary & higher education. On the contrary, this system introduced & developed forms of social selection at an ever-younger age. An analysis of survey findings concerning two groups of girls at the end of secondary school shows that, owing to structural changes & modifications in living standards in recent years, the process of social differentiation in education has speeded up. 4 Tables, 12 Figures, 2 Appendixes, 10 References.
