Summary: | An address given at the U of Muenster on Nov 7, 1961. The structural diff's between trade unions of highly developed nations & those of the newly emerging ones are described. In the West, there is a tendency for membership stagnation in unions, though financially they are stable. Western unions have become an integral part of the soc structure, but their influence is primarily on the pol'al level. In underdeveloped nations, on the other hand, membership is increasing. However, these org's, based on highly complex Western ones, do not yet correspond to highly developed industrial society. In addition, such nations are constantly facing the danger of inflation. It is concluded that unions play a vital role in the development of industry, & that they must work to preserve individual liberty. A. Chapman. |
