Description
Summary:Data on the land ownership patterns, diversity of occup's, & the range & distribution of cash income in a Visayan barrio are presented. On the basis of this data the existence of 3 SC's in Guinhangdan (pop 1200, 260 households) is postulated: a Lc, a Me, & an Uc. In the Lc are the 89 fishermen, laborers, & nipa sewers & sellers, of whom only 2 households have an income of more than 61 pesos a month. Definitely in the Uc are the 24 teachers, clerks & pensioned personnel, among whom only 2 households have an income of less than 61 pesos a month. Among the Lc workers only 21 own land, whereas only 1 of the Uc does not own land. The Me is the largest & most amorphous class in form & composition. While these factors do not describe class diff's in detail, it is felt that 'they are a quickly read & easily grasped indication of wide & pervasive diff's in opportunity & advantages of the way of life of a given fam or group.' It was found that most fams do not engage in a single subsistence activity to the exclusion of all others; that fishermen are the largest single occup'al group; that 34 fam's manage to exist with no cash at all or with as little as 15 pesos a month; & that there is not a clear relationship between the amount of land owned & the size of cash income.
