Summary: | An analysis of answers to a question re conscientious objection (CO), made during an investigation on civic att's carried out in Mar-May, 1962, based on a regional sample of young French people,of both sexesin the upper classes of general & vocational HSch's, & in teachers' Coll's. The closed question proposed the alternative between condemning or admitting the refusal to enter military service; however, R's were invited to justify their choice afterwards. Answers were compared to those of a preliminary investigation in 1957. Analysis r'ed answers with sex, age, type of Sch, level of educ, faro's socio-professional status, religious belief & practice, affiliation with youth groups, & with reponses to other questions re electoral abstention, the State, respect for nat'l symbols, loyalty to French citizenship, & the democratic or nondemocratic character of the present pol'al regime. Content analysis of the 'justifying' statements is given. The majority of responses excuse or justify CO based on religious or ethical grounds. Young girls are more inclined to condemnation than young men. Boys & girls of a higher educ'al level were less severe towards CO. Children of industrialists, artisans, businessmen, & agri'alists accepted CO more often than children of employees, workers, or intermediate supervisors. Children of higher public officials, & practising Catholics, were the most severe. The greater the participation in youth groups, the less the condemnation of CO. Greater belief in the democratic character of the present regime is r'ed with less acceptance of CO. Themes developed in the arguments for & against CO expressed stereotyped soc norms more often than arguments based on facts. An important minority is capable of expressing unprejudiced opinion, & of considering favorable arguments on the opposite side. (See also SA 1939-A9944) AA (Tr by L. Gimenez Melo). |
