Summary: | An examination of a territory of `Australian' New Guinea, called Chimbu land, based on P. Brown & H. C. Brookfield's study 'Chimbu Land and Society,' Oceania, 1959, 30, 1, Sep, 75 pp. The structure (patrilineal) of the Naregu tribe which inhabits this territory is analyzed, as well as their living arrangement, system of cultivation, & use of land, in an attempt to explain the existence of such an enclave of high Ru density in a generally under-populated area. It is concluded that the Naregus' utilization of the land-space would be inapplicable to large areas, or for long durations of time, but does insure, through relatively intensive agri'al techniques, the permanency of the tribe, in high density, on a small territory which serves as a refuge against attack.
