Summary: | One of the developments emerging from the recent government reinvention experience is so-called electronic government or e-gov. A joint report of the National Performance review & the Government Information Technology Services Board, Access America: Reengineering Through Information Technology, issued 3 Feb 1997, introduced the new term. As initially used in American public discourse, e-gov was little more than a general recognition of a confluence of information technology (IT) developments & the application & use of these technologies by government entities. Subsequently, it oftentimes came to be used as a symbol, an ambiguous reference to both current applications of IT to government operations & a goal of realizing more effective & less costly performance of government functions. It is a dynamic concept of varying meaning & significance. Adapted from the source document. |
