Summary: | A shared political view drew together three urban activist organizations -- the Society for the Protection of Area Resource Centers, the National Slum Dwellers' Federation, & Mahila Milah. The three partners formed the Alliance in 1987 & have since worked in the city of Mumbai (Bombay), Maharashtra, India, to secure improved living conditions for slum dwellers. The Alliance merges local activism with global networking & has succeeded in involving donor institutions & activist organizations in 14 other countries. The Alliance also works to bring the urban poor from a variety of different countries together in an effort to share their own knowledge of poverty. The vision that underlies the Alliance & its partners represents a "politics of patience," signifying both a new imaginary & a new political movement. 15 References. K. Larsen |
