Summary: | A replication of a study of academic dishonesty by C. M. Bonjean & R. McGee (see SA 1432/D0203). 3 hyp's concerned with soc control were tested using a sample of students attending a large U in the Northwest: (1) certain types of control systems encourage or allow a more precise knowledge of the rules intended to govern behavior; (2) knowledge of the rules is an important factor in controlling or reducing rule violation; & (3) fear of negative sanctions reduces the likelihood of violation. The original study compared proportions of students indicating that they either had or would violate 1 or more of 6 U rules. One sample of students was under an honor system whereas the other was under a proctor system. It was found that a smaller % of honor system students were likely to violate rules. The major explanation was that knowledge of rules is related to a smaller % of students willing to violate rules & knowledge of rules is greater under an honor system. The present study shows that, in another proctor system, the % of potential rule violators is as high or higher than the other proctor system but rule violation is not associated with knowledge of the rules. Neither study found support for hypothesis (3). AA. |
